Fluorobiotech: Revolutionising Recombinant Proteins in Biotech

In the ever-evolving field of biotechnology, innovative solutions are crucial to advancing research and industry applications. Fluorobiotech, a South African start-up and Stellenbosch University Spinout company, is at the forefront of this movement, specialising in the design and implementation of solutions used in the production of recombinant proteins. These specialised proteins are made using genetic engineering techniques and are extremely important in research and industry. They have a wide range of applications, including producing medicines like insulin, developing diagnostic tests like the COVID-19 test, and creating routine biological proteins used in research.

Established in late 2022, CEO of Fluorobiotech Dr Anton Du Preez van Staden, a molecular biologist with over a decade of experience working in the fields of microbiology and recombinant protein expression, joined forces with Co-Founder and COO of Fluorobiotech Ross Vermeulen. Together, they have combined their scientific expertise with a drive to create commercial value that can address the challenges faced by the biotech industry in South Africa.

The idea behind Fluorobiotech originated during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when supply chain disruptions highlighted the need for self-sufficiency in the biotech field. “Recognising the reliance on imported proteins, we saw an opportunity to provide local solutions while advancing the industry in our country,” says van Staden.

“At Fluorobiotech, our mission is twofold. Firstly, we aim to deliver high-quality, cost-effective recombinant proteins to our customers, simplifying the design, production, and optimisation process. Secondly, we endeavour to develop and provide essential biological tools routinely used in research and industry, reducing the dependence on imports”, says van Staden.

What sets Fluorobiotech apart from competitors is its unique combination of expertise and technology. Their team of passionate scientists collaborates closely with customers to understand their specific needs, creating tailored solutions. “Our protein production platform utilises cutting-edge technology that optimises efficiency, reduces costs, and increases speed. This allows us to produce high-quality proteins with a faster turnaround time, offering our customers substantial value,” notes van Staden.

Their entrepreneurial journey has been filled with challenges typical of startups. Navigating the business side of things, securing funding, and obtaining operational space were significant hurdles. However, with support from Stellenbosch University and Innovus, Fluorobiotech has gained valuable insights and access to resources. “Positive feedback from customers has been a highlight, affirming the importance of our work and motivating us to continue making a difference,” continues van Staden.

Innovus has been instrumental in our success. Providing infrastructure, resources, and mentorship, they have enabled us to develop our technology and secure initial funding. The SU LaunchLab programs offered invaluable insights into the business world, helping us grow and thrive as a business.

Fluorobiotech’s commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and building a sustainable biotech industry in South Africa drives its pursuit of excellence. “We envision a future where our locally produced recombinant proteins contribute significantly to research and development, solidifying Africa’s place as a global player in the biotechnology arena,” says van Staden. With the unwavering support of Stellenbosch University and Innovus, we are confident that Fluorobiotech will continue to evolve, making a lasting impact on the world of biotechnology.
