In recognition of his significant contributions to Stellenbosch University (SU), Hein Swanepoel, Senior Director of SUNCOM received the prestigious Chancellor’s Award. Under his leadership, the university’s commercial office is thriving and is a key contributor to the institution’s fifth income stream.
As part of his commendation, Prof Stan du Plessis, the Chief Operations Officer of Operations and Finance, wrote:
“Adv Hein Swanepoel built Stellenbosch University’s enviable Commercial Services division (SUNCOM) through more than thirty years of exceptional leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and commercial know-how. He played a crucial role in developing and implementing the University’s Tera Term financial system and created the commercial model for our beloved Student Centre, the Neelsie.”
Amongst other responsibilities, Hein oversees the university’s commercial entities such as Residence Services, Transport Services, the SU Botanical Garden, Food Services and Compliance, the Copy and Print Department and the Letting Office. Under his leadership, Factory209 Pty (Ltd) was formed, along with other successful business ventures such as CECO, Maties Shop, Gradlinc and Neelsie 3@1, and the soon to be launched Consulting Support Services unit.
Gradlinc, a platform that Hein pioneered to connect potential employers, graduates and universities, is a striking example of how commercialisation can positively benefit the industry with various other institutions that have already registered to use the platform.
Hein’s commitment, entrepreneurial mindset and his passion for people has made a lasting impact on the SU staff, students and external stakeholders. Receiving the Chancellor’s Award is a well-deserved recognition and a testament to the influence of his contributions on the university’s growth, innovation and excellence.
